The last StuCo meeting was last night and it had a bit of a different exigence. Rather than talking about what we were going to be doing in the near future, we were discussing what we had done throughout the whole year. It created a different feeling. Rather than excitement and determination to make something new happen and run smoothly, we were thinking about what we had accomplished. It was a more humble mood in the GFC as we thought back to what really worked and what should be changed for next year.
It was great to be able to reflect with a group of people who had worked together all year to try to get the Honors College more involved and known in the community. Even when there were points that we disagreed about no one got upset with the other person for giving their opinion. The group dynamic was great because everyone was very understanding and we know we want to accomplish the same goals.
The rhetoric of a group meeting with an open discussion can be very interesting because there tends to be someone who likes to dominate the conversation and state their opinions in a blunt manner. This last meeting with StuCo though was not that way at all. It was very civil and we discussed all the points we needed to without anyone getting upset. Everyone was able to contribute the opinions they had and feel like they would not be judged for what they believed.

Advertisments and their impact on everyday life

Attached is a link to one of the other dorito commercials that aired during the superbowl. I'll give a breif summary of what happens in case you can't watch it right now: There is a guy trimming his bushes and looking over them into the next yard watching someone eating salsa doritos and drinking martinis. The music is very catchy with a spanish flair and makes you think he is watching a couple of hot girls as they lay out and snack on doritos. Then his girlfriend comes over and gets his attention, and you hear someone call out from the next yard and say hi to her. The camera pans and you see that it is two gay guys that are laying out.
From the very beggining, the commercial catches your attention because the music draws you in. The fact that they are salsa flavored doritos and they have spanish music appeals to the audience because it creates a connection between two aspects of the commercial. Then they show the martini glasses and it creates logos because it makes you start to think about what kind of person is on the other side of the bushes. It evokes curiousity and you want the camera to move over, so you make sure to pay attention so that you don't miss it if the camera finally does move over.
Then when the guy's girlfriends comes over, it appeals to your emotions. For girls you feel bad for the girlfriend because you know she probably feels jealous that her boyfriend is looking at other "girls". The guys can relate to the man because they know what it feels like when they get caught looking at another girl by their girlfriend. Then when tyou hear them call out and say hi to the girlfriend and the camera moves to them and you see its a guy, it really surprises you and makes you laugh. This commercial appeals to just about anyone who is teenage age and older. Everyone has experienced these kinds of things after their teenage years and the fact that it is actually gay guys and not girls that he is looking at just adds a funny aspect to help the audience remember the product. With a little bit of laughter after the emotional appeal the dorito name sticks with you.

Relay Speaker =]
This weekend I participated in Relay for Life. At the closing ceremony there was a motivational speaker who spoke about continuing the fight against cancer. He was very effective for a number of reasons. The way he spoke to the college crowd really engaged the audience and made them feel proud about what they had done so far to promote cancer research. He talked about how great Penn State is as a whole which was a great way to encourage the students to continue fundraising and furthering awareness about cancer research. Penn State students have a ton of school spirit so anytime someone talks about the atmosphere of Penn State and the achievements of the student body it automatically reaches the students and grabs their attention.
The speaker also used a great deal of pathos in ways other than just encouraging school spirit. Since the entire 24 hours was spent taking a walk to show that cancer can’t defeat us, he made sure to make it obvious that there are other ways we can fight too. He talked about why he was involved in Relay for Life and said he too tried to support those he knew who were affected by cancer in multiple ways throughout the year, not just at Relay. He asked everyone to think about a loved one who as cancer, passed away from cancer, or who has beat cancer. By thinking about those we know it really encourages us to do something and fight cancer with more fury.

Media Projects
Today we watched all of the media projects in class. Most of them had a great exigence. The controversies that were choosen to be presented were very relevant to the lives of college students. As we get older, we need to become more well-rounded and knowledgable about that issues that are occuring throughout the world and our community, so all of the issues that were discussed in the video projects had a lot more of an impact now that we are on our own and more responsible.
The way the issues were presented were very successful for most of the videos. I thought they used a great combination of both pictures and text and audio, for the most part, so it kept your attention throughout the entire video. Sometimes a few of the images were a little distracting because I wasn't exactly sure how they related to what the audio of the video was. Also a some points the images had words on them that distracted from the audio because as you tried to read what the image said you weren't listening as closely to the audio.
This same thing happened with the music that was played at different points in the videos. I really liked the music choices of a lot of the groups because it created the right mood for what they were saying in their videos. The only issue I found with the music at times was that when it was played as background while someone's interveiw was also being shown, it kind of distracted from what the person was saying. At times the music was too loud to be background. When the music was played on slides that just had words though it was extremely efffective. Overall the videos were great!
